Coaching – skill needed in Managers

Managers, have an immense impact on employee productivity and engagement, and for this influence and impact one of the top skills required of a great Manager is Coaching skill

How can Managers be coaches for their team, here is a 7-point actionable plan: –

1. Know your team members – know their strengths, weaknesses, challenges, aspirations, personality type and use their skills in the most effective way. Knowing people helps to deepen the relationship.
2. Be transparent – being transparent with your employees helps to build trust, and ensure that everyone is on the same page. Promote open communication in the team, show them the way by leading by example
3. Encourage collaboration in the team by discouraging unhealthy competition and giving recognition to group achievements rather than individual success.
4. Have clearly defined goals for team and individuals with milestones and timelines agreed and communicated to all those impacted
5. Facilitate achievement of goals – ensure that your team has access to software, resources, training, materials, and anything else they might need to be successful in their roles.
6. Celebrate milestones and goals achieved to keep your team on track, motivated, and inspired. Also celebrate work anniversaries, professional and personal achievements of team members to boost their morale
7. Build mutual trust – trust is at the root of effective coaching relationship.While fostering transparency can help to establish trust, you may also want to have an open-door policy; be clear, friendly, and non-judgmental in each coaching meeting and make an effort to show your employees that you care for them

Above all, the conversations you have with the team should be that of seeking opinion and feedback instead of enforcing. Treat them as valuable members of the team, and have a keen interest in them and their success.
